Looks like I need to check out the 18th and 8th ave location of the Chipotle. According to this Serious Eats article they have a secret menu that’s not so secret. Chef Nate Appleman, formerly of Pulino’s, has been working at a test kitchen there and occasionally offers up some of the creations to the public. It’s also the only location in the city that makes everything in house.

I’m already a fan of Chipotle as far as fast food mexican goes, but the promise of new dishes made from scratch is exciting. Too bad I’m terrible with secret menu things. Unless it’s prominently advertised (so not secret at all and more just like a specials menu) I rarely have the balls to go for it. I’ve never even tried the “secret” menu at In-N-Out Burger. But for new tacos, I’ll do anything.

I recently used Gamefly to procure a game I’ve been wanting to play for five years: Bully, from Rockstar games. I have only ever seen anyone play it once, a at a party where I was so uncomfortable that I just sat and watched some drunk jock mash the buttons to beat up nerds, all the while wondering if this guy was recapturing something with the game, or if it just felt great to run around doing all of the things he didn’t/couldn’t/wouldn’t/failed to do in high school.

So far, I haven’t had more than a couple hours of time to play the game. Things have been pretty busy around here, and I can already tell that this game is going to be a huge, and satisfying time sink. I might have to quit all of my jobs, or take a hiatus from freelancing to really get into it the way I want to.

I’ve spent a little time wailing on nerds, and made out with a fat chick. I knocked out all of the football players with my trusty slingshot, and nearly set a kid on fire with a firecracker. Still, you know what I haven’t done? Skipped, or failed a class. No matter how many tools that this game has given me to be a cool kid, bent on bucking the educational system, and practicing the fine art of truancy cum sangfroid, Bully can’t make me shake my bookishness.

Taqueria Downtown, the Jersey City taco place I rave about is opening up a second location on the lower east side. They’ll be taking over the old Xiao Ye space at 198B Orchard Street. Get ready to hear a whole lot of “I told you so’s” when you finally realize they’re making the best tacos in the city.

I finally went to La Superior, the #1 taco place people have recommended to me since I started doing this blog. I have to say, the size of the tacos were off-putting. I can get larger tacos of the same quality and price at plenty of other places in the city. But, that being said, this place lived up to the hype. I haven’t had as much fun eating at any other taco joint in town.

The variety of small plates is what made it excellent for sharing. We ordered chips and guac and fundido con chorizo which is just cheese and meat. It’s awesome. If I made this at home, I would feel gross. But here it’s a legitimate dish so it’s okay to eat it.

It’s really hard not to make an easy joke so I will. Fundido really is fun!

We also got esquites which is a cheesy, mayonnaise, corn combination. In my dreams, it’s amazing. But in reality it never quite works out. I think it’s because it needs to be baked or something. The mayo never clings to the corn correctly. It always seems like it’s missing a step.

On to the tacos. I ordered lengua, pork and shrimp.

I chose shrimp because La Superior has a reputation for good tacos so I figured if anyone could make shrimp work it would be them. It didn’t. I have to say shrimp is a lost cause at this point. (Don’t even ask if I’m going to try Taco Bell’s new shrimp taco. I’m not. I’ll leave that kind of insanity to Courtney if she’s up for it.)

The pork was good. I just need my pork greasier. Everything compared to Taqueria Jersey City seems dry. The lengua was the stand out. Although, I have yet to have a bad tongue taco so I’m beginning to think it’s the anti-shrimp, every version of it is good.

Overall, very glad I visited La Superior. Super fun place with good food.

I’m not a fan of fight videos and this one is pretty destructive but it is amazing to see the before and after on this taco joint. I couldn’t help but think this could have all be avoided is they would have just split an order of taquitos.
