West Coast of New York

The first thing people always say when I tell them I review tacos in New York is “Really? Shouldn’t you be on the west coast?” Yea, I guess. The taco culture is bigger out there. And it’s bolstered by the fact that they’re closer to Mexico and have warm sunny days year round. I always respond with “Please, this is New York. There are plenty of good tacos here.” But secretly, they’re right. I long to saunter up to a taco stand in a bikini after spending my day riding the waves.

Enter Rockaway Taco.

Rockaway is the closest you’ll get to the west coast experience. It’s got a big surf scene and it’s easily accessible by public transportation.

I was already sold after the ride down. The A train travels on narrow tracks across Jamaica Bay. It gives the impression that you’re riding right on the water. I can’t describe how great it feels to be able to take a train to the beach. Maybe it’s being stuck in the city all day that you forget you’re right next to the water. So when you finally get out there on public transportation it feels like you’ve crossed over into another world.

The atmosphere couldn’t have been more perfect. This taco stand is quite literally a shack. And the outdoor seating feels like a private backyard party. I was just hoping the food would be any good because I knew I would be coming back regardless.

I ordered the fish, carne deluxe (with guacamole) and the chorizo. Holy god, the fish taco was amazing. Best I’ve ever had on the east coast easily. I mean, this was the thing that they were not allowed to fail at. If there’s anything you would want more at the beach, it’s a fish taco and they really pulled through. The carne and the chorizo were entirely capable but they paled in comparison to the glory of the fish taco. The carne had a marinade that was too sweet for my tastes. It almost tasted like bbq sauce. But the meat was tender and the toppings were excellent. The chorizo didn’t have enough of a char. I like it to be really crispy. But again, delicious. I got a watermelon agua to wash it all down. They were supposed to have a watermelon limeade which I would have liked more but they were all out by the time I got there.

The icing on the cake was the adorable take home menus.

After my meal I grabbed what was left of my watermelon agua and headed to the beach. I’ll tell you, the thing that’s been missing from every taco experience I’ve had in New York is the opportunity to check out the ocean afterward. Sun, sand and tacos really do go together perfectly.

Chelsea Chipotle Holds A Secret

Looks like I need to check out the 18th and 8th ave location of the Chipotle. According to this Serious Eats article they have a secret menu that’s not so secret. Chef Nate Appleman, formerly of Pulino’s, has been working at a test kitchen there and occasionally offers up some of the creations to the public. It’s also the only location in the city that makes everything in house.

I’m already a fan of Chipotle as far as fast food mexican goes, but the promise of new dishes made from scratch is exciting. Too bad I’m terrible with secret menu things. Unless it’s prominently advertised (so not secret at all and more just like a specials menu) I rarely have the balls to go for it. I’ve never even tried the “secret” menu at In-N-Out Burger. But for new tacos, I’ll do anything.

Finally, It Happened to Me

I finally went to La Superior, the #1 taco place people have recommended to me since I started doing this blog. I have to say, the size of the tacos were off-putting. I can get larger tacos of the same quality and price at plenty of other places in the city. But, that being said, this place lived up to the hype. I haven’t had as much fun eating at any other taco joint in town.

The variety of small plates is what made it excellent for sharing. We ordered chips and guac and fundido con chorizo which is just cheese and meat. It’s awesome. If I made this at home, I would feel gross. But here it’s a legitimate dish so it’s okay to eat it.

It’s really hard not to make an easy joke so I will. Fundido really is fun!

We also got esquites which is a cheesy, mayonnaise, corn combination. In my dreams, it’s amazing. But in reality it never quite works out. I think it’s because it needs to be baked or something. The mayo never clings to the corn correctly. It always seems like it’s missing a step.

On to the tacos. I ordered lengua, pork and shrimp.

I chose shrimp because La Superior has a reputation for good tacos so I figured if anyone could make shrimp work it would be them. It didn’t. I have to say shrimp is a lost cause at this point. (Don’t even ask if I’m going to try Taco Bell’s new shrimp taco. I’m not. I’ll leave that kind of insanity to Courtney if she’s up for it.)

The pork was good. I just need my pork greasier. Everything compared to Taqueria Jersey City seems dry. The lengua was the stand out. Although, I have yet to have a bad tongue taco so I’m beginning to think it’s the anti-shrimp, every version of it is good.

Overall, very glad I visited La Superior. Super fun place with good food.
